A small village.
A big dream

A community-led learning space reimagining

education in the hills of Kalikot, Nepal

A safe place to grow,
right at home.

In the upper regions of Kalikot (2000-3000 meters above sea level), access to education is limited. Many children are forced to travel through steep mountain trails to reach the nearest school or migrate out of the village, leaving behind their families. Flow Open School began as a response to this reality, a simple but powerful idea: what if learning could happen inside the village, without children having to leave their roots behind?

We are a small group of educators and  community members who are together building a safe learning space within the mountain village so children can study close to homes and families. So learning can flow gently into their lives, nurturing not only their minds and bodies, but also their connection with the land around them.

We believe
in Flow

We believe
in Flow

At Flow Open School, we use flow arts as a pedagogy to cultivate attention, emotional awareness, and embodied learning.

Flow arts draw from meditative movement traditions such as Tai Chi, using rhythm, repetition, and presence to strengthen focus, regulate the nervous system, and support deep learning. Here, movement is not a break from learning, it is part of learning.

What is Flow Open School?

Flow Open School is a community-rooted learning space in Thamkhet village, Kalikot. It is a place where children learn through movement, nature, creativity, and everyday life close to their homes and communities.

Why did Flow Open School begin in Thamket?

Thamket is a remote mountain village in Kalikot in Karnali province of western Nepal. It is a region shaped by political conflicts, forced migration, and uneven development. During the Nepali civil war, this area witnessed intense Maoist movements and state responses. Many public systems, including education and infrastructure, were disrupted or left fragile. Over time, limited local livelihood pushed generations of young people to migrate abroad, often through unsafe or informal routes. Even today, education in and around Thamket remains difficult to sustain. Schools are far, understaffed, and poorly resourced. Flow Open School emerged from these social realities of Thamket, not as an external intervention, but as a locally rooted response. Flow Open School exists because conventional schooling alone does not fully meet the needs of this region. At Flow Open School, we envision an education that grows from the social, cultural and geographical realities of the region.

What does the school offer?

Flow Open School blends formal education with flow arts, movement, and creative learning. Children explore academic subjects alongside life skills, local knowledge, and modern tools. A community garden becomes a living classroom for learning about food, land, and care. Guided by four pillars: movement, nature, community, and holistic learning, the school supports children to grow with awareness, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

How has our journey been so far?

Flow Open School currently has one dedicated classroom and a 5,000 sq. ft. outdoor learning space, including a newly built open sitting area for outdoor study and play. Around 51 children are part of the school, learning through academics, flow arts, life skills, and creative exploration. Beyond the village, the team has facilitated flow-based learning workshops in government schools and community spaces across Nepal, including Kavre and Kathmandu, in collaboration with local organisations such as EcoHimal Nepal.

What is the long-term vision of Flow Open School?

We believe meaningful education emerges when communities are empowered to imagine and create their own learning spaces, rooted in their realities. Flow Open School envisions growing into a permanent community-run space with trained educators, safe infrastructure, and programs that support both children and the wider community. Our long-term goal is not just to run a school, but to build a locally rooted model of holistic education and sustainable livelihood that can inspire similar initiatives in other rural regions.

How can I support Flow Open School?

Flow School grows through the support of people who care about learning rooted in curiosity, movement, and community. We welcome volunteers who would like to share their time, skills, or energy at the school. We are also open to educational ideas, tools, and learning materials that align with our philosophy and can be thoughtfully adapted into our space. We are continually exploring ways to build a self-sustaining, holistic model of education, and we are happy to learn from you. Especially if you have experience with alternative approaches or community-led initiatives. Running the program requires financial support, and contributions play an important role in helping us sustain and grow. If this vision speaks to you, we invite you to take a step, offer your time, share your ideas, contribute resources, or support us financially. You are welcome here.
